Sarpatta Parambarai – A Boxing Classic

No exaggeration….. move aside Rocky, Raging Bull, Cindrella man and the likes, one of the finest boxing genre films I have ever seen. So many characters so beautifully etched, written and sculpted and from the very minute the drama unfolds we are immediately transcended to their world. Seriously Pasupathi’s acting as a boxing coach was so epic and you just along with him experience the gamut of emotions he goes through to save his clan.. Phenomenal histrionics by all the cast and wonder how every single performer has managed to churn out their career best. Was yearning for some good period drama and this movie satiates the need of cinema lovers across genres. Dont have a clue as to if anyone else would have played the role of Kabilan like Arya with such finesse and dedication. He seemed to be in a beast mode and has performed with some stunning meticulousness. The dancing rose character seems to have caught everyone’s fancy as well and we surely know why after seeing his impeccable performance. John Kokken and John Vijay have been simply brilliant to say the least in their roles as well. I like the way Ranjith portrays women in his films. A far cry from the damsel in distress and the proverbial picture perfect heroines. Glad to see some strong women essaying their roles with effortless ease. Finally we need to thank the man at the helm. Ranjith for having come out with such structured and layered story telling and great directorial touches throughout the film because of which we could actually excuse him for some predictable ending but nevertheless the boxing bouts looked so professional akin to some George Foreman and Ali rivalry. Not to miss this coming of age sports saga with a lesson or two in the areas of self realisation and self actualisation. Come back saga’s whether in sport or in life does attract and appeal to all senses and so will this film for all its understated elegance and style sprinkled all over. A resounding knock out punch delivered by the entire team. Bravo boys.
